Happy Mother’s Day from Middle-earth!
To celebrate this day I’ll quote a very cool post by TORN containing a brief summary of the most important mothers from the 1st age. I’ve added more to include all the most prominent mothers from all the three ages. Hope you enjoy it and have an awesome day!Anairë -wife of Fingolfin and mother of Fingon, Turgon, Aredhel and Argon.
Aredhel - the White Lady of the Noldor, daughter of Fingolfin and Anairë. Her skin was pale and dark was her hair. She met Eöl in the forest of Nan Elmoth where she had Maeglin. She was killed by her own husband when he attempted to kill his son with a stab.
Arwen Undómiel - daughter of Elrond and Celebrían, she refused the gift of immortality, choosing to marry Aragorn II instead, they had several sons: Eldarion and other daughters, whose name are not known. Died in the hill of Cerin Amroth in Lothlórien.
Bell Gamgee - married to Hamfast Gamgee, mother of Hamson, Halfred, Daisy, May, Samwise and Marigold.
Celebrían - daughter of Celeborn and Galadriel, she married Elrond and gave him 3 sons: Arwen and the twins Elrohir and Elladan.
Eärwen - the ‘sea maiden’ of Alqualondë, weeded Finarfin and became mother of Finrod, Angrod, Aegnor and Galadriel.
Eglantine Banks - wife of Thain Paladin Took, mother of Pearl, Pimpernel, Pervinca and Pippin.
Elwing – Daughter of Dior, who escaping from Doriath with the Silmaril wedded Earendil at the Mouths of Sirion and went with him to Valinor; mother of Elrond and Elros. The name means ‘Star-spray’ ; see Lanthir Lamath.
Emeldir – Called the Man-hearted; wife of Barahir and mother of Beren; led the women and children of the House of Beor from Dorthonion after the Dagor Bragollach. (She was herself also a descendant of Beor the Old, and her father’s name was Beren; this is not stated in the text.)
Esmeralda Took - Daughter of Adalgrim Took, married to Saradoc Bradybuck, she was Mistress of Buckland and of Brandy Hall. She only had one child: Meriadoc (Merry) Brandybuck.
Finduilas: sister of Prince Imharil of Dol Amroth, weeded Denethor II and mother of Boromir and Faramir. She did her best to raise Faramir on her own, once he was often ignored by his father. After Denethor II became Steward of Gondor, her health began to dwindle in Minas Tirith, she died at her 38 years old.
Galadriel - a Noldo elf, one of the Calaquendi, bearer of the ring Nenya and lady of the golden forest of Lothlórien. Fourth child of Finarfin and married to Celeborn (they had only one child Celebrían, even though it is said in some versions that Amroth was also their son).
Gilraen - Daughter of Dírhael and Ivorwen, married to Arathorn II, she is the mother of Aragorn II.
Hareth – Daughter of Halmir of Brethil; wedded Galdor of Dor, mother of Húrin and Huor.
Idril – Called Celebrindal ‘Silverfoot’, the daughter (and only child) of Turgon and Elenwë; wife of Tuor, mother of Eärendil, with whom she escaped from Gondolin to the Mouths of Sirion; departed thence with Tuor into the West.
Indis – Vanyarin Elf, close kin of Ingwë; second wife of Finwë, mother of Fingolfin and Finarfin.
Lindórië – Mother of Inzilbeth. One of the Faithful of Númenor.
Lúthien Tinúviel - daughter of King Thingol of Doriath and Melian, the Maia. The fairest maiden to have ever lived. Due to her undying love to Beren, she was granted a unique fate, to become mortal and return to Middle-earth with Beren, where they dwelt on the green island of Tol Galen in the River Adurant. They only had one son, Dior.
Melian – A Maia, who left Valinor and came to Middle-earth; afterwards the Queen of King Thingol in Doriath, about which she set a girdle of enchantment, the Girdle of Melian; mother of Lúthien, and fore-mother of Elrond and Elros.
Míriel Serindë – The first wife of Finwë, mother of Fëanor; died after Fëanor’s birth. Called Serinde ‘the Broideress’.
Morwen – Daughter of Baragund (nephew of Barahir, the father of Beren); wife of Húrin and mother of Túrin and Nienor; called Eledhwen (translated in the text as ‘Elfsheen’) and the Lady of Dor-lómin.
Morwen Steelsheen - Married to Thengel, they had two sons: Théoden and Théodwyn.
Nerdanel - daughter of Mahtan and the wife of Fëanor. She bore him seven sons: Maedhros, Maglor, Celegorm, Caranthir, Curufin, Amrod, and Amras. Nerdanel was red-haired and a notorious sculptor. She refused to follow her husband to Middle-earth.
Nimloth – Elf of Doriath who wedded Dior Thingol’s Heir; mother of Elwing; slain in Menegroth in the attack by the sons of Fëanor.
Primula Brandybuck - the youngest daughter of Gorbadoc Brandybuck, married to Drogo Baggins, mother of Frodo Baggins. She and her husband died when they went boating on the Brandywine River.
Rían – Daughter of Belegund (nephew of Barahir, the father of Beren);wife of Huor and mother of Tuor; after Huor’s death died of grief on the Haudh-en-Ndengin.
Silmariën – Daughter of Tar-Elendil, the fourth King of Númenor; mother of the first lord of Andunie and ancestress of Elendil and his sons Isildur and Anarion.
Théodwyn - sister of Théoden and daughter of Thengel and Morwen Stellsheen. Married to Éomund of Eastfold, they had two sons, Eómer and Éowyn.
